Introduction of our research

The Department of Radiation Epidemiology was established in April 1997, and Professor Yoshisada Shibata became the first head of the department in December 1998. After Professor Shibata’s retirement, Noboru Takamura was appointed as Chief Professor of the department in April 2008, and the name of the department was renamed to the Department of Global Health, Medicine and Welfare in April 2011 due to the reorganization.

In addition to conducting research and providing medical support for victims related to the Chornobyl nuclear power plant accident and other nuclear disasters, the department has been participating in risk and crisis communication after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in March 2011. We have set up our local bases in Kawauchi Village, Tomioka town, Okuma town, and Futaba town, and conducting research and activities that promote the reconstruction of Fukushima.
