The 6th International Symposium on
A New Challenge of Radiation Health Risk Management

In The last fiscal year of Nagasaki University “Global Strategic Center for Radiation Health Risk Control” being selected as one of the winners of the “FY 2007 Global COE Program”, “The 6th International Symposium on A New Challenge of Radiation Health Risk Management” was held on October 20 - 22, 2011 at Matsumoto Ryojun Hall, Nagasaki University School of Medicine. The number of participants amounted to about 150, including WHO Headquarters, IAEA, IARC and Invitation persons from institutes which have joined or are to join the consortium of the former Soviet Union and Western countries and researchers, and the symposium was led to success.

The opening ceremony of the symposium was commenced with the opening address by Dr. Shigeru Katamine, President of Nagasaki University, followed by addresses of three guests, Dr. Toshiteru Okubo (Chairman, Radiation Effects Research Foundation), Kenji Kamiya (Director, Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine), Dr. Shigenobu Nagataki (Professor Emeritus, Nagasaki University) and ended with introduction to the COE program by Prof. Shunichi Yamashita of Project Leader. The first day of the symposium ended with the overview lectures given by Associate Ohtsura Niwa (Professor Emeritus, Kyoto University), Tom K. Hei (Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, Columbia University Medical Center), Zhanat Carr (Scientist, WHO Headquarters), Roy E. Shore (Vice Chairman/Executive Director, Radiation Effects Research Foundation), Rethy Kieth Chhem (Director, Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, International Atomic Energy Agency), Kazuo Sakai (Director, Research Center for Radiation Protection, National Institute of Radiological Sciences). On the second day and third day of the symposium, a total of 31 papers were presented at the sessions of “Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident-related issues” and “Risk Communication and Radiation Protection” added to the three session of “Radiation Basic Life Sciences”, “Atomic Bomb Disease Medicine Research” and “International Radiation Health Sciences Research”. We arranged the result of research over these four years and promoted the new interdisciplinary domain "contamination medical study”. Simultaneously with them, we discussed about the directivity and the state of the radiation healthy risk management after Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. The lectures of this symposium are due to be published as a bulletin at the end of the Heisei 23 fiscal year.
