Report on visit to India Report

This trip was planned for attending the 2nd international GCOE symposium held at Kalasalingam University, India and to collect urine samples from the coastal people of Kanyakumari district for the measurement of urinary iodine concentration.
The 2nd GCOE symposium entitled “Seminar on Current and Future Radiation research between India and Japan” was organized jointly by Nagasaki University and Department of Physics of Kalasalingam University of India within the frame work of GCOE. The symposium was held at Kalasalingam University, Srivilliputur, Tamilnadu, India on 5th February, 2009. Totally there were seven invited talks out of which 3 was delivered by the Professors of Nagasaki University (Dr. Noboru Takamura, Prof. Naoki Matsuda and Dr.Akihiko Suyama) and four was delivered from the Tamilnadu prefecture scientist. All the seven talks are very interesting and potentially very important for young researchers. About 100 participants from the various colleges of Tamilnadu prefecture attended and they interacted with the seven invited speakers.
After the seminar, I visited the Kanyakumari district of Tamilnadu for collecting Urine samples for the measurement of urinary iodine. A team consisting of me and two more researchers from the Prof. S. Selvasekarapandian’s laboratory went to village namely Kadiyapattinam, which is mining area of the Indian Rare Earth limited and also natural high background radiation area having indoor gamma doses not less than 3mSv/year. From 9the February to 14th February, we visited the village and had discussion with the people and we convinced them for giving urine samples and finally they agreed for sample collection on 15th February, 2009. With the help of M/s Vivek blood testing institute, 99 person’s urine samples were collected. The blood samples were also collected for complete hemogram testing (ESR, hemoglobin level, RBC count, glucose level, total leucocytes count etc) and the results were given to the people on the next day. Then on 17th February another camp was organized in the same village and 120 urine samples and 20 blood samples have been collected. Upon two days of sampling totally 220 urine samples and 65 blood samples have been collected and carried to Nagasaki for further measurements. I am really grateful to the GCOE program for the financial support to go to India for participating in the symposium and to carry out the sample collection.
